What is video identification?
Video identification is an identity verification process in which a person demonstrates who they are through a real-time video connection or through a recorded process that is later validated by a qualified agent.
This system means the picture of the person can be compared with their official identity document (Spanish DNI, passport, Spanish Foreigner’s Identity Document-NIE), while applying biometric recognition techniques and security controls to rule out any potential fraud such as impersonation or digital manipulation.
In practice, video identification has become the digital alternative to the traditional face-to-face contact that was previously required for many in-person procedures.
Video identification use cases
Some 80% of consumers are in favour of digital processes that streamline and improve services, reflecting a clear preference for solutions that combine convenience and security. Its application extends to many areas:
- Banking: Opening accounts, taking out loans or verifying customers without having to visit a branch.
- Insurance: Immediate purchase of health, travel or car insurance policies with full legal validity.
- Public administration: access to digital certificates or management of aid/grant applications with no need to travel.
- E-commerce: Identity verification to prevent fraud on high-value purchases.
- Telecommunications and utilities: 100% digital registration of new customers for telephone, internet, water or electricity services.
- Human Resources: guarantee identity in digital recruitment processes.
Why is it important to choose video identification?
The digitalisation of many processes has accelerated the need for reliable identification mechanisms. Video identification is key because:
- Identities can be verified remotely, without the need for travel or in-person procedures, thereby reducing costs.
- It reinforces security against fraud, using biometrics and advanced validation techniques.
- It complies with European regulations, especially the eIDAS Regulation and Law 10/2010 on the prevention of money laundering and financing of terrorism.
- It streamlines digital processes, reducing verification times from days to minutes. For example, this way contracts can be concluded or accounts opened in a matter of minutes.
What regulations apply to video identification?
Not all forms of identity verification are legally valid. In Spain, the SEPBLAC (Executive Service of the Commission for the Prevention of Money Laundering) regulates the use of video identification for financial institutions and obliged entities, establishing the criteria that must be met for this process to be fully valid.
Moreover, the eIDAS Regulation in Europe recognises video identification as a valid method for issuing qualified electronic certificates, provided that it is performed with the necessary technical and security safeguards.
In other words, it is not enough to just “record a video”: video identification must be performed by a qualified provider such as Logalty that complies with all regulatory requirements.
Logalty’s solution: video identification with legal validity
At Logalty we have developed a video identification by videoconference service that combines advanced technology and regulatory compliance. We offer two different modes of video identification: assisted and unassisted. In the assisted mode, we have our own platform to carry out the process, whereas the unassisted option enables the identity of a natural person to be verified online with no need for an operator connected in real time to be present.
Some of its key features:
- SEPBLAC and eIDAS-compliant: our service guarantees that each identification process has full legal validity in Spain and the EU.
- Qualified agent supervising the session: human validation to reinforce reliability.
- Certified electronic evidence: an evidence document is generated with full traceability (date, time, IP address,).
- Integrated with the issuance of qualified electronic certificates: the user can obtain a certificate from Logalty after completing their video identification.
- Secure custody of evidence for at least 5 years, in accordance with the highest security requirements (ENS, ISO 27001).
Thanks to this service, companies, banks, insurers and organisations can remotely identify customers or users with complete confidence. Contact Logalty for more information about our video identification process.
